A Brief History:
Historically, the land known today as the Republic of Thyria never truly held any outstanding traits. It’s land was never conducive towards agriculture, it didn’t hold rich caches of rare metals and gems, nor did it have any truly strategic and economic relevance other than the fact that it bordered the inland sea and numerous iron mines. In fact, the area was largely unpopulated - home to a small league of city states called the Thyrian League - before settlers from various parts of the Empire started moving in. The city-states, while able to fend off previous threats, saw the futility of fighting and submitted peacefully, thus becoming the province of Thyria.

Truly, Old Thyria only held a few important roles in the Empire, the most important of which was that it served as the heartland for many of it’s legions. Thyria’s central location in the Empire meant that it was something of an local epicenter for its military strength - a place for new, somewhat local, legions to be trained, and old ones to be retrofitted. However, despite the numerous military installations scattered across the province, there was still plenty of land to go around. As such, retirement cities were established. The Empire would reward those who served it duly, by giving retired veterans small bits of land inside the otherwise unuseful province. While initially the veterans were grateful to the empire, their loyalty to the state was slowly replaced a newfound their loyalty to each other and their communities due to the harshness of the local environment.

When the Empire collapsed, the legates stationed in Thyria saw a chance to seize power for themselves. Each was an ambitious man or woman, and had only been previously kept in check by the Imperial family and by each other. With the Imperial family out of the picture, that balance had been destroyed. All expected Thyria to succumb to bloody infighting, and thus made plans to exert their influence over the divided provence.

However, some legates came an unexpected decision. Instead of wasting strength and time on infighting, a permanent alliance between them would ensure that their faction was the strongest of the Thyrian legions. They swiftly crushed their immediate enemies, and before long the others had either joined their cause or had been killed. However, instead of turning on each other, they decided to maintain their alliance in order to protect themselves from any possible invasion by their neighbors. Thus, they formed the Council of Legates, and declared themselves the independent Republic of Thyria.

While this was happening, the people of Thyria themselves were reeling from news of the death of the imperial family. Many had always been deeply religious - a byproduct of their simple lifestyle - but with recent events their faith had been deeply shaken. Due to this, many started turning towards an extremist sect of the Imperial Faith, called the Church of Light. The Church’s following swelled in number, attracting people from all walks of life, from the poorest of the poor to even many of the members of the newly formed Council of Legates.

Culture, Government, and Religion:
Contrary to what its name suggests, the Republic of Thyria is most accurately described as a religious military state.

The residents of Thyria are, as they always have been, a hardy people. Due to the relative barrenness of the land and the scarcity of precious metals other than iron, the average citizen could only expect a modest lifestyle, without the many luxuries found in other lands. Even some of the the socioeconomic elite of the nation aren’t nearly as wealthy as their counterparts elsewhere. In addition, the high numbers of veterans - both younger and older - have ensured an almost military-esque discipline in the general populace. It is not uncommon to see a town with a small but well trained militia for sole the purpose of teaching the next generation the virtues of hard work and discipline.

As the Council of Legates came into power, they quickly passed several laws that ensured the quick militarization of their country. The most important of said laws was known as the Citizen Act. Under the Citizen Act, the only nationals that would be allowed to become citizens are veterans or those who are currently serving in the military. Thus, all citizens of the republic are currently serving or have served in a Thyrian legion. Citizens have many privileges over nationals (the term for residents who do not have citizenship). Expressly, they are allowed to both vote and run for office, as well as own their own business or land. However, citizens between the age of twenty and thirty are technically part of a ‘reserve legion’, and are considered military personnel. While they do not undergo as harsh training as active legionnaires, the number of citizens in this age range allows Thyria to raise new active legions incredibly quickly.

Thyria is ruled by the aforementioned Council of Legates. The size of the council is determined by the total number of legions, both active and reserve, in the republic. Thus, the number of legates will naturally increase as the number of citizens of fighting age increases. New legates nominated by existing ones and are voted upon by the governors of each province, who are in turn voted into office by the citizens of each town. Legates and governors must have held an officer’s role in the military, but any other government offices are open to enlisted men.

While the Council of Legates technically has control over both the army and domestic policy, the local church, known as the Church of Light, wields a large amount of influence over their decisions. Due to the fall of the empire, many in the provence found themselves questioning their old faith. Thus, they turned to the Church of Light, which quickly gained followers among all aspects of the population, including some members of the Council of Legates. The church’s beliefs are roughly in line with the main imperial church, but are considered a bit more extreme. They believe that the sun is the physical manifestation of Amantas while the moon is the physical manifestation of Ahakas. They believe the empire fell because the imperial family fell out of favor with Amantas and thus were smited. They have voiced their support for the Council of Legates - stating that they are doing right what the old empire did not.

Military:
During the period of infighting shortly after the fall of the Trevastine Empire, the legates that would eventually become the founding members of the Council of Legates made several minor reforms in order to better suit their needs. Namely, they’ve changed their focus away from heavy infantry backed by skirmishers to a formula involving skilled archers protected by said heavy infantry - all of which is supported by a small but effective cavalry force.

A homage to the military system of the old Trevastine Empire, the main infantry used by the Republic of Thyria is still called the legionnaire. In fact, much of the Republican legionnaires’ equipment has remained the same. However, due to their prolific usage in defensive roles before the formation of the republic, they have been trained in the use of spears instead of the sword.

Perhaps one of the defining features of the Thyrian military is its prolific use of the longbow. The Thyrian infighters recognized its incredible range and often utilized it against each other in battles. It has become such a staple of Thyrian warfare that the role of the legionnaires changed from an offensive one to a defensive one. Additionally, Thyrian longbowmen are equipped with arming sword, buckler, and heavy armor, allowing them to hold their own in a fight if need be.

Perhaps the most underdeveloped and least numerous part of the Thyrian military would be its cavalry core. Due to their relative rarity in Thyria, most of the horses used in the military actually belong to the church, due to their massive wealth and power. Almost all of them are used as heavy cavalry to great effect, despite their small numbers. They also serve as an honor guard to legates and important members of the Church of Light. The few horses not owned by the church are often used for reconnaissance.

Complementing the Thyrian knights, the Warriors of Light are a cult of soldiers solely owned and operated by the Church of Light. Decked in opulent golden armor that calls back to Amantas' war form, they are elite warriors tasked with defending important locations and people.

While the navy of the Republic of Thyria may be at the wrong end of many a joke, they still strive to keep local waters clear of piracy. They are disciplined, and have a heavy emphasis on ramming and boarding techniques during combat.

Notable Cities and Fortifications
Today, the old city states remain the largest cities in Thyria, boasting the most impressive fortifications and largest populations.

The Capital of Avilia

Originally the largest of the old city states, Avilia has since grown into one of the most important cities on Thyrian soil. Originally named Anthum, the city was renamed after the decorated veteran and founder of the Church of Light Avilius Nero shortly before the fall of the Trevastine Empire. It was then nominated as the seat of the Council of Legates after the creation of the Republic of Thyria.

The Port City of Mistgate

The only other city to rival Avilia’s important would be the city of Mistgate. Home to the largest port in the nation, it is the center for almost all trade - both by land and sea. It is also home to the Thyrian navy.

The Citadel of Light

The Citadel of Light is the newest fortification in Thyria, and is a cross between fortress and church. Funded and designed by the Church of Light, it is considered as a bastion against any forces of darkness that may threaten the land. However, only legions commanded by a follower of the Church may have access.

The Shield of Pertinax

The Shield of Pertinax, also known as the ‘Home of the Legions’ was the old fortress used to house and maintain the central Haestian legions during the time of the Trevastine Empire. It is a sprawling complex, and is located near vast plains on which legions may conduct drills. It was named after Emperor Pertinax II, who commissioned it shortly before his untimely death by choking on a serving of peacock.
